Once upon a time, in a land from south - eastern Europe, called Wallachia (we must say that in old times Romania was splited in three countries, Transylvania, Wallachia and Moldavia even if their people were all roumanians), lived a voivode, great ruler of his country. Thanks to his special merits he was made knight of the Dragon Order, distinction given by the great emperor of Hungary, the neighbour country. Since he received this distinction, because of the likeness in Romanian between the words “dragon” and “devil”, he will be remembered as Vlad the Devil.
During his life, this great voivode was blessed with three sons and their name were: Mircea, Vlad and Radu. This was a great gift for a ruler of a country (though, because of the historical events, the only son who had the throne of Wallachia was the middle son, the one who will be known as Vlad the Impeller).
The time passed, these sons grew older and one of them had to replace their father on the throne. But, you need to know something: in that time all emperors wanted to enlarge their countries and because of its beauties and riches, Wallachia was the target of many attacks. Though, of all countries, the Turks were the most determined in their trials to conquer Wallachia and they succeeded to take as prisoners the two younger sons of Vlad the Devil and their father. But this wasn't enough, because after some time Vlad the Devil returns to his throne. Also, the two sons return to their country.
When all things seemed calm and nice, a great tragedy took place in the family of the voivode Vlad the Devil ; he and his older son, Mircea were killed. Now, the responsibility of the throne fell on the shoulders of the middle son, Vlad the Impaler (named in roumanian Vlad Tepes). But the struggles for power and for the throne of Wallachia were hard and Vlad, still young and unexperienced, was forced to give up this privilege and ran to Moldova. Even there, he had no peace because his uncle, the ruler of Moldova, was murdered and he had to run to Transylvania to save his life.
After all these trials and hardships, Vlad is determined to fight for the throne of his country, Wallachia. Again, the decision of the young Vlad did not find agreement and the first attempt of murder to his life takes place. Angry and disappointed, Vlad finds out about the plans against him and turns the situation into his favour, taking back the throne of Wallachia. Having, at last, the power in his hands, his first thought was to punish the men who killed his father and older brother. Considering that these people deserved a cruel payment for their act, Vlad forced them to work at the rebuilding of a castle, called Poenari. The reign of Vlad in Wallachia, wasn't supposed to be a peaceful one, because in short time, another pretender of the throne of Wallachia thought to declare war to its actual ruler. But Vlad proves to be stronger than his enemy, won the war, caught the pretender and the punishment for his boldness to win Wallachia is impalement. This was the cruellest penalty used by Vlad for all traitors, beggars, thieves and liars. Actually, his wish was to clean the country of all that is useless, all cheating or betrayal. That is why, through his cruel punishments, he hoped that people would take care of their actions and try to live honestly.
Because of his cruelty some people named him “Vlad the Impaler”, they considered him evil and they gave birth to all kinds of legends, compared to some other people that considered the ruler a great and even perfect defender of truth.
But life went on and in the days of our voivode took place a happy event. He married a relative of the Hungarian emperor, Matei Corvin and the two become allied. This event upset the Turks who sent an army to fight Vlad. Of course that the courageous voivode defeated them and the punishment they received you already know: impalement.
Looks like the peace wasn't fated to Vlad. After only a year he got arrested by the Hungarian Emperor and sent to jail for 13 years. The time passed and finally the voivode was relieved of jail. At his return in Wallachia, Vlad was re-elected as ruler by the country meeting. Unfortunately this year would be his last as king of Wallachia because a plot made of boyars and Turks murdered him. It is said that he was decapitated and his head was sent to Constantinopole where the Sultan had it displayed as a sign of pride after so many trials to defeat this powerful enemy.
This was an unhappy end for a great ruler like Vlad, called the Impaler, but still, he gained his place in history through his deeds and actions. And more, because of his cruel penalties were born many legends and myths on his behalf that circled the whole world inspiring different writers like Bram Stoker who fascinated everyone with his novel “Dracula”.
